For the Community

Community members are the backbone to any student support system. Family members, friends of family, coaches, mentors, religious leaders and so many more assist parents and students while they navigate the Special Education world. This page is to supply you with more ways to become a better helping hand.

What are some things that I can do to help families of special needs children?

  1. Make families feel comfortable and included

  2. Offer assistance (when welcomed)

  3. Do your research

  4. Recognize that children with special needs are unique, but they are kids like everyone else!

Many students with special needs are involved in extracurriculars and religious organizations. Check out these two videos that highlight the importance of inclusive communities!

Some reflective questions to keep in mind:

When you see a child with dis/abilities with their family in the community, what thoughts do you have about the child and their family?

What do you think these families need? What are their concerns?

What are your thoughts about your role when it comes to families of children with disabilities?
